SIF

SIF is the newest product category in Indian investing. Most people haven't heard of it. Even most distributors aren't talking about it yet.

That's partly why we think it's worth understanding now — before it becomes crowded with noise.

WHAT IS A SIF

A Specialised Investment Fund sits between a mutual fund and a PMS.

Mutual funds pool your money with lakhs of other investors into standardised strategies. PMS gives you a fully customised portfolio but requires ₹50 lakhs minimum and a high risk appetite. SIF was created to fill the gap between the two — offering more sophisticated investment strategies than a standard mutual fund, at a lower entry point than PMS.

The minimum investment is ₹10 lakhs. The strategies are more flexible — fund managers can use techniques like long-short positions and derivatives overlays that aren't available in regular mutual funds. The result is a product that can potentially behave differently from the broader market — in both directions.

WHO IS THIS FOR

You have a mature mutual fund portfolio and you understand how markets work. You're not new to investing. You're at a point where you want something with more sophistication than a standard fund — but you're not ready for, or interested in, a full PMS.

Maybe ₹10 to ₹20 lakhs of your portfolio is sitting in a category that isn't doing the job you want it to. SIF might be worth exploring for that allocation specifically — not as a replacement for your core portfolio, but as a more active layer on top of it.

You should also be genuinely comfortable with the idea that more sophisticated strategies carry more sophisticated risks. A fund that can take short positions or use derivatives can protect better in a falling market — but it can also underperform in a rising one if the positioning is wrong. That's the trade-off.

WHERE THE PRODUCT STANDS RIGHT NOW

We want to be straightforward about something.

SIF is a new product category. The regulatory framework was established recently and funds are still in early stages. There isn't meaningful performance data yet across a full market cycle — which means nobody can tell you with confidence how these strategies will behave when markets get genuinely difficult.

That's not a reason to avoid it. It's a reason to be thoughtful about how much of your portfolio goes here, and to work with someone who is paying close attention to how the category develops.

We're doing that work. We're evaluating the early SIF offerings carefully — looking at the fund houses behind them, the strategies being used, and whether the product makes sense for specific client situations before we recommend it to anyone.

WHAT WE DO HERE

We don't recommend SIF because it's new and interesting. We recommend it when it genuinely fits.

If you come to us curious about SIF, we'll start the same way we always do — understanding your existing portfolio, your goals, and what you're actually trying to solve for. If SIF belongs in that picture, we'll tell you why specifically. If it doesn't, we'll tell you that too and point you towards what does.

WHAT THIS IS NOT

A proven product with years of performance data. It's new. Anyone presenting it otherwise isn't being straight with you.

A replacement for your mutual fund portfolio. Think of it as an additional allocation — for a specific portion of capital where you want a more active, sophisticated approach.

For everyone. If you're still building your core portfolio, this isn't the right conversation yet. Come back to it when your mutual fund portfolio is solid and you have surplus to allocate differently.

If you're curious about SIF and want to understand whether it belongs in your portfolio — we're happy to walk you through it.

No commitment. Just a conversation about whether it makes sense for where you are.
